New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again when we’re inclined to turn over a new leaf. Most Americans make a New Year’s resolution; however, the majority of us lose our way in only a matter of weeks. In this segment from the January 11th Sacramento & Co. airing, I talk about the value of making resolutions at the start of the year and what some of the most common goals for 2010 are. I was fighting a head cold, getting used to new braces and operating on just a few hours of sleep in case you’re thinking that I look like I’m in need of a fresh start.  The year is going much better now. Onward!

Sacramento & Co. – July 13, 2009

On the heels of International Happiness Day, I revisit the topic of happiness and how we can strive to achieve it. In preparing, I found a recently published article in The Atlantic Monthly that revealed a 70+ year longitudinal study of 280 Harvard men from their sophomore year until present. It’s an unprecedented look at the many facets of their lives and what their bottom line is when it comes to happiness and life satisfaction.

I was inspired by the Supreme Court nomination of Justice Sotomayor to talk about empathy. To my mind, empathy as an emotional competency is misunderstood and has become code for something else. Often it’s confused with sympathy. Today’s segment addresses the differences and how empathy can be a valuable tool in the workplace.

How many times have you started eating chips or cookies from a bag and before you know it they’re gone? Mindless eating happens all the time, but if we bring some awareness to it — even just some of the time — we can regain control over our eating and our waistline.

My heritage is Scottish, but it’s close enough that I love St. Patrick’s Day. Today’s segment followed a trio of talented young girls in ringlets dancing an Irish jig. All of that energy was a good backdrop for the topic of longevity and extending your productive years.

Today’s was a fun segment. The night before, I had been invited to attend an Oscar gala as a guest of News10 so I took some light ribbing from Guy & Kristen about my martini appetizers. At least the olives contain healthy, unsaturated fat. Anyway, the topic for today is staying committed to New Year’s resolutions. At the 8-week mark, the vast majority of Americans have already given up on their commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Watch for tips to stay on track.

As the holidays approach, the mood on the set lightens.  I even take a fun stab at the word of the day.  The topic however is serious. Stress and overindulgence over the holidays contribute to a rise in fatal heart attacks during December & January.
